H Street Great Street says Steuart Development intends to break ground on their project in the 300 block of H Street later this spring.

That's great...do you think that the police will start monitoring the lower end of H street? I'm always so uncomfortable walking by the crowds that hang out outside of Major's carryout and the trashy liquor store below 8th streeet.

you mean the black people? Or is there a gathering of some other group, perhaps pasty caucasian anime fans, that makes you "uncomfortable," but who, by virtue of the substance of your comment, have never taken any overtly aggressive action toward you?
No, wait, you must mean black people.
The police already monitor that end of H street. Check the crime reports. The cops roll their eyes at the black dudes who hang out on the corner all day, and they laugh at the white people are made "uncomfortable" by them.

Nice try buddy...I'm black. But please, tell me how the police react to the young black woman that's uncomfortable walking by the "black dudes" who happen to look/dress like her brother or cousin?
Don't make assumptions based on very limited information, i.e. a 2 sentence comment on a blog.
I just find people hanging out on a street corner, blocking the sidewalk to be ridiculous. I don't care if they are black, white, asian or otherwise. Loitering is loitering and I think most normal people may have a problem with it.

making someone "uncomfortable" is not against the law. I'd recommend talking to your brother, cousin, whomever, and addressing that issue -- whether it's aimed at initiating a socio-cultural shift at the ground level, or just getting their help in developing a basic understanding of the proper role of law enforcement.

But apparently you think it's completly normal to loiter in front of liquor stores. I'll see you hanging in front of Major's Carry Out on my next trip up H street, moron....

That group of guys that stand at 12th & H really hurt Naby's business. Ask the Horance & Dickie staff how often they have to chase off the deadbeats that hang around their store.

bluebell is 100% right... it's not about color, or anything else. There are groups of all types hanging out all over H Street.
But in front of Major's and the liquor store in particular, the new sidewalk is a mess with gum and chicken bones, and the guys there block the sidewalk.
It doesn't help that it's also a busy bus hub, so there are also people waiting for the buses. Hopefully this will be improved by a combination of (1) police presence; (2) something replacing those two awful stores some day; and (3) wider sidewalks and the bus/streetcar stop bulbouts.
Other carry-outs (and liquor stores) in the area are much more respectful of their neighbors by cleaning up, and more respectful of their customers by providing a place to sit inside to wait for food. These two places, and their customers, are awful.

it is beyond screwed up when a person can't make a comment about being made uncomfortable by loiterers without because accused of classism and racism. grow up people. don't be such a whiney sensitive complainer. we have a right to a safe city that is conducive to all types of people walking around and all kinds of business.
that being said, other business on the block really need to stand up and make their block more friendly for their customers.
